Did I tell you about that time I swam in nuclear flavored water?
Located in Spotsylvania Virginia, Lake Anna State Park is connected to one of the most popular lakes in Virginia. The lake of Lake Anna is a 13,000 acre reservoir created by damming the North Anna river to cool Virginia Power’s nuclear power plant. The Lake is split into two sections; a 3400 acre impoundment where heated water from the Power Plant is dispersed and the 9600 acre section which the public enjoys. Dominion Energy (did you catch the name change) has for over 20 years sucked in cool water and poured back out warmer water into Lake Anna. And yes, I swam in Lake Anna and had a blast! Lake Anna State Park has a small beach area that for a small fee you too can enjoy.
One Fish Two Fish are there any Blue Gill fish?
Yes! There are Blue Gill Fish. Beneath the waters of Lake Anna swim striped bass, largemouth bass, perch, crappies, catfish, and bluegill. So bring your boat and rods, who knows maybe you will also catch the glimpse of the elusive giant bass from many fish tales. Confession time, I just made that up, I have not heard anything about a giant bass but wouldn’t it be fun to spin a tale of the giant bass of Lake Anna?
Lake Anna State Park Amenities
Other than fishing, amenities include a small beachfront, 11 trails, boat launches, camp sites, cabins, yurts and access to the13,000 acre lake. Campsites are large and most have electricity and water. There is a shared dump with two sewage sites. And finally, Lake Anna State Park has gold!
There’s Gold in them thar Hills!.
In the 1800s, Virginia was part of the Gold Rush. During the gold rush there were around 23 gold mines in the area; however, to strike it rich now you will need a Ranger to help you locate your fortune. Before you hop in your buggy and ride to them “thar” hills, you need to plan your arrival for summer. Look on the schedule of events to book your golden opportunity.
While the summer is the perfect time for panning for Gold, I enjoyed Lake Anna State Park more during the fall. In the summer it can be standing room only; while in the fall there are fewer people, less lake traffic and the park is peaceful.
